Deadly Helene Weakens to a Tropical Storm Moving Inland Over Georgia

At least three people are dead as Hurricane Helene slammed the southeast. One person was killed in Tampa after a highway sign fell onto their vehicle. Another two people are dead in Wheeler County, Georgia, after a possible tornado hit a mobile home.

Hurricane Helene has been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center puts the center of the storm near Atlanta, Georgia.

Helene made landfall Thursday night in Florida's Big Bend area as a Category 4 hurricane packing maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour.

Some one-point-six million customers are without power as Hurricane Helene tears across the Southeast. The majority of those are in Florida, where the storm came ashore Thursday night as a Category 4 with winds of 140 miles per hour. According to tracking site Poweroutage.us about one-point-two million people are in the dark in Florida, with hundreds of thousands more in the same situation in Georgia.

Over 9,000 flights are delayed today, with nearly a 1,000 flights canceled as Helene continues its deadly strike on states.
